Special Olympics is a global movement that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power of sport, every day around the world. Through sports, health, education and community programming, Special Olympics is tackling inactivity, intolerance, isolation and injustice that people throughout the world face, especially
people with intellectual disabilities
The mission of Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA) is to provide year-round sports training and competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy, and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills, and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes, and the community.
SOPA trains 16,000 athletes who compete annually in 21 Olympic-type sports at over 300 local, sectional, and state level competitions. All training and competition opportunities are provided free of charge to the athletes and their families, enabling everyone to experience the benefits of Special Olympics that extend well beyond the playing field.
The UNcathlon is a UNique team challenge that unleashes the human spirit through the transformative power of teamwork, bringing awareness to Special Olympics Pennsylvania (SOPA). UNCathlon, celebrating its 5th year, will take place on Sunday, September 19, 2021 at the AHN Arena on the Peters Township High School campus.
The UNcathlon event embodies SOPA’s daily goal: Inclusion and acceptance through sport. Similar to a traditional decathlon, this unique event consists of 10 events; but it has a twist- an 11th event! Since the UNcathlon is a fundraiser benefiting SOPA, the 11th event is FUNDRAISING! The funds raised help to provide training and sport competitions, free of charge to thousands of deserving athletes.
The event will be UNified, UNconventional & UNforgettable! Teams consist of five individuals, plus a Special Olympics Pennsylvania athlete for a total of 6 participants. SOPA will provide an athlete for each team. All teams must be co-ed. Participants will be challenged both physically and mentally; and will be tasked with the additional challenge of raising funds in support of more than 16,000 PA athletes
The day of the event, each team will take part in 10 physical trials. The 10 events will test SPEED, STRENGTH, and ENDURANCE
